Professional Background:

Cheng served on the President's Campus Planning Committee as a faculty representative and elected twice to the Faculty Council's and Faculty Senate's Budget and Planning Committee. Served on the Institute committees to create the Institute-wide BS in Information Technology degree program and the MS in Information Technology degree program. Continued to serve on these two degree programs and their committees. At the departmental level, served at different times as the Doctoral Program Director and the Undergraduate Program Director to the Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems department, School of Engineering. Also served as a founding director to the Chinese American Information System Educators Association, and as a member on the Technical Committee of Material Handling for the American Society of Mechnical Engineers. Have been a founder of Metaworld Enterprises, Inc. and Enter Net, Inc. Consulted for Coopers and Lybrant, Digital (now a part of Oracle), and General Electric. Current international service includes a Fulbright Senior Specialist project to lecture in Taiwan and to assist Vietnamese universities teaching and using Information Systems. On-going service to the profession includes a Web site at http://viu.eng.rpi.edu, which provides virtual studios for the teaching of databases, information systems analysis and design, and e-business technology, as well as a downloadable CASE (computer-aided software engineering) tool and other research results on enterprise integration by Dr. Hsu and collaborators. The Web site has logged over 100,000 visitors and over 2000 confirmed downloads since 1995 when it was first launched. A number of universities in Hong Kong, Thailand, Switzerland, Spain, South Africa, Chile, Canada, as well as in the US, have been known to have used the CASE tool in classes.

Cheng Hsu is devoted to the development of information technology to solve enterprise engineering problems. The general areas of research include enterprise integration and collaboration, e-business and IT-enabled manufacturing enterprises, information visualization and data and knowledge systems methodologies. He created the Two-Stage Entity-Relationship model for data and knowledge systems analysis and design; the Metadatabase model for multiple databases integration; and the Enterprise Market model for open and scalable information sharing and processing in e-business and Internet environments. He also developed the extended metadata approach to feasibly process natural language database queries and has been a principal investigator on a number of government and industry-sponsored research projects. The sponsors included The National Science Foundation, ARMY Research Laboratory, New York State Departrment of Transportation, NATO, Alcoa, Digital (now part of Oracle), General Electric, General Motors, IBM, and Samsung. Service to the profession includes membership on the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (associate editor and guest editor) and chairpersonship and program membership to several conferences (such as IEEE SMC Conferences and the International Conferences on Data Engineering, Entity and Relationship Approach, and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing). Invited to give seminars and workshops on Metadatabase, TSER, and IT at a number of international institutions (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, France, and Brazil). He has published close to 100 papers in over two dozen scholarly archival journals (such as ACM and IEEE Transactions, and Management Sciences) and numerous scholarly conference proceedings. Have a few patents pending.
