The IME curriculum seeks to graduate
high quality industrial and management engineers and prepare
them for successful careers in the 21st Century. The Industrial
and Management Engineering (IME) bachelor's degree program
provides students with a strong technical skill base in process
design and reengineering, computer information systems, data
analysis, systems modeling, facility design, quality systems
and management. Additionally, IME students gain experience
in the use of a variety of technologies, including computer-aided
design tools, simulation modeling tools and a diversity of
measurement instrumentation. Our IME program has an outstanding
national and international reputation and has many regional
and national awards for excellence in the past twenty years
from Alpha Pi Mu, the international academic honor society
for industrial engineering. The Industrial and Management
Engineering Program at Rensselaer is accredited by the Engineering
Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering
and Technology (ABET), 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore,
MD 21202-4012 - telephone: (410) 347-7700.
Objectives
of Our Undergraduate Curriculum
Three to five years after graduation, graduates of Rensselaer’s Bachelor’s program in Industrial and Management Engineering will:
Objective
1 - exhibit a total integrated systems perspective enabling: a.) thorough understanding of manufacturing systems, service systems and supply chains, b.) knowledge of engineering relationships to the planning, organization, implementation and control of human centered systems, and c.) the effective application of information through computing and other emerging technologies.
Objective
2 - be creative and innovative designers of systems, processes, facilities, services, products, organizational teams, and equipment with an understanding of the stochastic nature of management systems enabling the skillful identification, modeling, analysis, solution and management of real world problems.
Objective
3 - be effective oral and written communicators with a solid foundation for using communications media and interpersonal skills to facilitate their roles as contributors and leaders of diverse teams.
Objective
4 - be broadly educated in the humanities, social sciences and engineering professionalism which informs their socially responsible and ethical professional practice.
Objective
5 - understand the importance of life long learning and be capable and motivated to pursue continued growth, learning and innovation throughout the professional career.
Objective
6 - apply a solid foundation in math and science in professional practice.
Students in the IME curriculum supplement their coursework
by working as consultants on an industry project. As part
of the project, each student works closely with a faculty
member. Further details on degree requirements are available
through the RPI
catalogue.

Co-operative
Opportunities
Our co-operative (co-op) program offers each student the opportunity
to work on salary with a major company as part of his/her
training. A significant proportion of IME undergraduates take
a co-op assignment. Co-op programs are easily arranged so
that a student can complete his/her work assignment with only
one semester's delay in the date of graduation.
Employment
Opportunities
In recent years, IME's have applied the experience gained
here not only in traditional areas such as manufacturing but
also in health care, banking and distribution systems. Recent
IME graduates have accepted positions with such firms as Citicorp,
AT&T, Accenture, Procter and Gamble, IBM, General Electric,
General Motors, the U.S. Postal Service, the Department of
Defense, and many others.
